No call-out fee
Locksmith with no call-out fee in Wolverhampton, Stafford and Cannock
From £90. No call-out fee on standard attended work, day or night.
I'm Sean. I run Lockerfella as a one-man-band out of Brewood. No call-out fee on any standard attended locksmith job I complete, day, night, weekend, bank holiday. The phone rings on me, I quote the all-in price before I set off, and that's the figure you pay when the work's done. No two-stage bill. No call-centre fee. No "discovered" extras on the doorstep. The one narrow exception (wasted journey: nobody home, no access, unsafe site) is laid out further down.
- No Call-Out Fee
- No VAT Added
- Standard DBS Checked
- £1M Insured
- 12 months Guarantee
What no call-out fee actually means here
A lot of locksmith websites say "no call-out fee" and quietly mean something else when you read the small print. Mine is straightforward, so here's exactly what it means on a job from me.
-
If you call me and the job turns out to be something I can't fix, you owe nothing.
I'd rather drive home empty-handed than charge you for a job I couldn't finish. It happens. A door that's swollen with damp, a lock that needs a manufacturer-only part on order, a problem I can't diagnose without a part you don't have yet. You don't pay for the attempt.
-
If you call me and decide not to go ahead after I've quoted you, you owe nothing.
I quote the all-in cost on the phone before I set off, and I'll re-confirm it once I've looked at the door. If the answer makes you want to think about it overnight, or ring your insurer first, or get a second opinion, that's your call. I'll head off. No deposit was taken, so there's nothing to refund.
-
If the job is something you could have sorted yourself, I'll tell you that and head off.
Genuinely. About one in twelve calls I attend turn out to be something the customer could have sorted with a firm push, a key wiggle, or a hex key on the door hinge. I tell you what to try, I watch you try it, and if it works I leave with nothing on the receipt. That's the trade-off that makes the no-call-out-fee model honest: most jobs do need me, and the ones that don't, don't.
-
If the address is outside my listed service areas, I quote any extra travel on the phone before I set off.
The published from-prices apply across every listed service area. For an address outside that list, I quote the travel on the phone and you decide whether it's worth it. The all-in figure includes the travel; nothing is added on the doorstep.
The narrow exception, in plain English: the four promises above cover every situation a customer can reasonably end up in. They do not cover wasted journeys that aren't my fault. If I drive out to the address you gave me and you are not there at the agreed time and I can't reach you to reschedule, or I cannot get access to the door, or the situation on site turns out to be unsafe for me to work in, I may charge a reasonable wasted-journey fee covering the travel and call-out time. I will tell you the amount before I leave. The exact wording is in my terms and conditions, section 9. This is the same trader protection every honest locksmith carries, and in practice I almost never apply it. The point of the no-call-out-fee policy is that you don't pay for me showing up; it isn't a blanket waiver of the standard wasted-journey rules.
Why most locksmiths charge one (and why I don't)
The locksmith trade has a real reputation problem, and the call-out fee sits at the centre of it. Here's the short version of why.
A national locksmith number on Google is usually a call centre. The person who answers the phone takes the job, quotes you a low headline figure to lock you in, and dispatches a self-employed fitter on commission. The fitter has a target to hit and a cut of every job, the call centre takes its share off the top, and the website needs to keep paying for the Google ads that brought you in. None of that gets paid for by goodwill. It gets paid for on your doorstep.
A common assumption
Most people assume a locksmith with no call-out fee must be charging more elsewhere to recoup it. A one-man-band doesn't need to. There's no call-centre fee, no marketing budget being recouped, and no commission going out to a third-party fitter. The price drops, not the other way round.
This isn't a small problem. The Master Locksmiths Association has logged a 66% rise in overcharging complaints between 2021 and 2025, going from 242 cases to 402 (source: Master Locksmiths Association). I have documented the seven recurring UK locksmith scam patterns on a dedicated page, but the pattern in the complaints is consistent: a £39 to £59 headline price on the phone, an unmarked van on the doorstep, "discovered" extra work, and a card machine with hundreds of pounds on it before the customer fully knows what they've agreed to.
Independent industry data backs the same picture. The Keytek Forgetfulness Index (Locksmithing Census 2020-2025), which analysed 350,000 UK locksmith call-outs between 2020 and 2025, found that around 1 in 5 are caused by simple human error rather than mechanical failure, and that lockouts peak at 7pm as people get home from work (source: Keytek Forgetfulness Index (Locksmithing Census 2020-2025)). The takeaway: most callouts are quick, predictable, and well-defined. There is no honest reason a quick, predictable, well-defined job should arrive with a card machine showing hundreds of pounds the customer never agreed to. A separate call-out fee is the lever the bad operators use to keep their headline price low while making the final bill anything they want.
I'm not a call centre. The phone rings on me. I quote on the phone. I show up in a sign-written van with my name on it. I confirm the figure before I start. The figure on the card machine matches the figure I said on the phone. If anything genuinely unexpected turns up on site, I tell you the cost before I start work, not after.
Real call-outs, real bills, no fee on top
Three recent jobs across the West Midlands and south Staffordshire. Real people I helped, real prices on the receipt, sat next to what a national locksmith number would have quoted them on the phone for the same job. Customer details lightly anonymised at their request.

Thankyou for your review Adrijus. It was my pleasure to be able to help! Sean. Lockerfella Locksmiths
I contacted Sean in a panic after our back door wouldn’t lock at 21:15 on a Sunday night. Sean came back with a price almost immediately and offered to come and look at it straightaway. At my request, I asked him to come Monday morning and he sent me an ETA and turned up bang on time. Sean quickly diagnosed the problem, he had to go off to get a a part and when he was on his way back to me, he even shared his location via WhatsApp so I knew when he would be back. Part fitted, worksite cleaned up and he was on his way. Reasonably priced, fantastic communication from start to finish and a great bloke to speak too as well. Thanks Sean, you’re an absolute star!
Absolute pleasure meeting you and your wife today in Codsall / Wolverhampton. I'm really pleased I was able to repair your faulty upvc door mechanism. Thankyou for the glowing review....it's really appreciated. Sean - Lockerfella Locksmiths 24/7

About the locksmith
The locksmith answering your call
I'm Sean Hamilton. I run Lockerfella as a one-man-band. The no-call-out-fee policy on this page only works because the phone rings on me. There's no call centre to feed, no franchise badge to fund, and no third-party fitter taking a cut. If you ring Lockerfella, you get me, and the price I quote is the price you pay.
- 30+ years fascinated by locks. I've been picking, stripping and studying locks for the love of it for over 30 years. Lockerfella is what happens when a lifelong interest in how locks work becomes the day job.
- Trained and certified. Certificate of Locksmith Skills from A'Jam Locksmiths covering cylinder, mortice, padlock, wafer and euro lock picking, plus re-keying and mortice bypassing.
- Standard DBS checked, £1M insured, 12 months workmanship guarantee. Redacted DBS and insurance certificates are published on the About page, with originals available to view in person before work starts.
- One man, one van, one phone number. The phone rings on me directly. No call centre. No third-party fitter. If I quote you a price, that's the price you pay.
Questions about no call-out fees
Straight answers about what "no call-out fee" actually means in practice.
Is there genuinely no call-out fee, or is there a catch?
No catch. I don't charge a separate fee just for turning up. You pay for the labour and any parts I fit, and that's it. If you call me, I quote you the all-in price on the phone before I set off. If the job turns out to be something I can't help with, or you decide not to go ahead after I've looked at it, you don't owe me anything. The reason I can run this way is that the phone rings on me directly. There's no call-centre fee, no marketing budget being recouped, and no commission going out to a third-party fitter.
What's the difference between a no-call-out-fee locksmith and one that charges one?
A call-out fee usually means there are two prices on your bill: one just for the van pulling up, and a second for the actual work. National call-centre operators tend to charge a call-out fee of £90 to £170 on top of labour, often with extra surcharges for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. I charge the all-in price I quoted you and that's the figure on the receipt. The Master Locksmiths Association has logged a 66% rise in overcharging complaints between 2021 and 2025, so this matters more than it used to.
What if you come out and the job turns out to be something I could have sorted myself?
You don't owe me anything. Genuinely. If I arrive, look at the door, and the answer is "give it a firm push and try the key again", I'll tell you that and head off. It happens more often than you'd think, mostly with uPVC doors that have shifted slightly with the weather. I'd rather drive home with nothing than charge you for a problem that didn't need a locksmith. The trade-off works because most jobs do need me. If you're unsure on the phone, describe what's happening and I'll try to talk you through a couple of checks before either of us commits.
Do you charge differently for emergencies, nights, weekends, or bank holidays?
Yes, but it's a higher labour rate, not a separate call-out fee. Daytime emergency work is from £90. Out-of-hours (6pm to 8am on weekdays, plus all weekends and bank holidays) is from £170. That premium is what it costs to get someone out of bed at 2am. The figure is still quoted to you on the phone, before I leave the van, and that's the figure on the card machine when the job's done.
How do I know I won't get a doorstep surprise like the horror stories?
The bait-and-switch you've heard about works one way: someone quotes you £90 on the phone, turns up in an unmarked van, "discovers" more work, and hands you a card machine with hundreds of pounds on it. Two checks that protect you. First, ask whether you're speaking to the locksmith or a call centre. If it's a call centre, hang up. Second, ask for an all-in price on the phone and write it down. With me, the phone rings on me, I quote the all-in figure, I show up in a sign-written van with my name on it, and the figure on the receipt matches what I said on the phone. If anything genuinely unexpected turns up on site, I tell you the cost before I start, not after.
Do you take a deposit before coming out?
No. No deposit, no card details, no holding fee, nothing. You pay at the end, on the doorstep, after the job's done and you've seen it working. Cash, debit or credit card on a portable machine, or bank transfer, whichever suits you. If a "locksmith" on the phone asks for card details before they'll send anyone out, that's a red flag worth backing away from.
Do you charge for travel if I'm at the edge of your coverage?
The published from-prices apply across every listed service area, with nothing added for travel. For an address outside that list, I'll quote any extra travel on the phone before I commit to coming out, so you decide whether it's worth it. The principle is the same either way: you know the all-in figure before I leave the van.
Ready when you are
Locked out? Door won't lock? Key snapped?
Ring me and I'll quote the all-in cost on the phone before I leave the van. No call-out fee. No deposit. No surprises.
