On site across Birmingham in 35 to 60 minutes, depending on side of the city · No call-out fee

Birmingham is a regular destination, particularly for the western and northern Birmingham postcodes that are closer to Brewood. I cover the B1 to B76 postcodes, taking in the city and Sutton Coldfield, and realistically the parts closest to me, including Handsworth, Perry Barr, Aston, Smethwick and the north-western suburbs, are quickest to reach.

Trained to the current UK locksmith syllabus. Where a job in Birmingham calls for a security-rated lock I fit to the relevant UK standard: TS007 euro cylinders, BS 3621 mortice locks where the door takes one, and manufacturer specification for uPVC multi-point mechanisms and window locks. A basic like-for-like cylinder change starts at £90, with a TS007 3-star anti-snap upgrade quoted separately. Fresh van stock and a real motivation to do each job properly.

Working as a locksmith in Birmingham

Birmingham is enormous and the housing stock varies dramatically by area. The inner-city districts like Handsworth, Aston and Sparkbrook have a high proportion of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with wooden front doors. Suburbs like Erdington, Kings Heath and Hall Green are dominated by 1930s semi-detached homes. Outer suburbs like Frankley, Northfield and Sutton Coldfield (covered separately) have larger 1960s-1990s estates.

For Birmingham terraces, the most common upgrade is a BS 3621 mortice lock plus a more secure rim lock to replace older Yale-style nightlatches. For the 1930s suburbs, the original mortice locks are often still in service and benefit from a like-for-like BS 3621 replacement. For the modern estates, it's the same TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder upgrade story you see across the WV and WS postcodes.

Birmingham response times vary by area. The western and north-western parts of the city are 35-45 minutes from Brewood. Central and southern Birmingham can be 45-60 minutes depending on traffic, particularly around the M5/M6 junctions. I'll always give you a realistic ETA on the phone before I set off.

From the doorstep

Two Birmingham jobs, two routes

Birmingham response time depends almost entirely on which side of the city you are on, which also tends to correlate with the type of job. Two routine examples.

Western Birmingham, Handsworth or Smethwick area, around 35 to 45 minutes from Brewood. Most often a Victorian terrace with a wooden front door. Job: BS3621 mortice plus a high-security rim lock to bring it up to current insurance standards. Yale and ASSA ranges fit like-for-like into the existing pocket.

Southern Birmingham, Northfield or Frankley, 45 to 60 minutes depending on M5 traffic. More likely a 1990s or 2000s uPVC front. Job: TS007 3-star Ultion, ERA Fortress or Avocet ABS cylinder swap. 5 minutes physical work, 20 minutes on the doorstep with the customer to explain the kitemark and the insurance side.

Same trade, same standards, very different routes and door types. Both jobs were quoted on the phone before I left Brewood. The rate is set by the day and time of call (daytime or out-of-hours) so the price you hear on the call already accounts for when you rang. No call-out fee added on top, and the longer Birmingham drive is mine to swallow, not the customer's.

Recent locksmith jobs in Birmingham

A handful of recent Birmingham call-outs in plain English. The brand and price detail is exactly what was used and paid. Names and street references are published with each customer's explicit permission (see the editorial standards).

  1. Friday 1 May 2026 at 9.40am

Mrs Rajni Patel, A side street off Soho Road, Handsworth (Birmingham)

Victorian terrace, original 1890s timber front door. Mrs Patel's insurer had renewed and asked for a current BS 3621 mortice plus a high-security rim lock to replace the failing 1970s Yale-style nightlatch.

Daytime call, around 40 minutes from Brewood. Yale BS 3621 mortice in the original pocket plus an ERA high-security rim above, both like-for-like, no joinery. Around 80 minutes on site. £90 plus the parts. Itemised receipt with both kitemarks named.

  2. Saturday 9 May 2026 at 3.00pm

Gary and Jenny Cooper, A 1990s estate off the Bristol Road, Northfield (Birmingham)

uPVC front door, 1996 build, original cylinder. Their Northfield neighbour had had a forced entry the week before via a snap attack and Gary wanted his upgraded the same week.

Weekend rate £170 agreed up-front. About 55 minutes from Brewood (Saturday traffic on the M5 is what it is). Avocet ABS TS007 3-star fitted in around 8 minutes. Kitemark photo for the file. Total time on his doorstep: 25 minutes. Worth the longer drive when the alternative was the Coopers' back gate left open while they waited for someone closer.

  3. Wednesday 6 May 2026 at 1.10pm

Tom Hughes, A close off Lichfield Road, Aston (Birmingham)

Inter-war solid timber front door with the original mortice still in service after several decades. The lock had finally seized. Tom's insurer wanted a current BS 3621 in its place.

Daytime call, around 50 minutes from Brewood. ASSA BS 3621 mortice fitted like-for-like into the original pocket (period pocket sizes match modern cases without joinery). Around 60 minutes on site, original brass escutcheon untouched. £90 plus the lock.

Lock brands I fit in Birmingham

Birmingham's housing stock varies dramatically by district, so the brand mix here is wider than most of the towns I cover. Yale and ASSA ranges come up for the Victorian terraces in Handsworth, Aston and Sparkbrook. ERA Fortress and Avocet ABS are the cylinders most often asked for on the modern uPVC fronts in Erdington, Frankley and Northfield.

I'll fit whatever brand you prefer. These are simply the ones that come up most often on Birmingham front doors, and you're welcome to choose your own.

How it works

Why one Birmingham suburb's standard lock is not another's

Birmingham's housing was built across three centuries, by different builders, to different specs. A Handsworth Victorian terrace typically takes a 76mm-backset BS3621 5-lever mortice (the standard UK mortice case size). A 1930s Erdington semi sometimes has the slightly smaller 64mm backset instead. A 1990s uPVC door in Frankley has no mortice pocket at all; it is a euro cylinder housing instead. The right lock follows the door's original construction; trying to fit a single "standard" lock across all of them is exactly what creates the gaps that cost insurance claims later.

Was expecting a big bill. Wasn't. Fair play.

Common locksmith questions about Birmingham call-outs

Specifics for Birmingham and the surrounding area.

Do you cover the whole of Birmingham?

I cover the B1 to B76 postcodes, which take in the city itself and Sutton Coldfield. Realistic response times vary by which side of the city you're on. The western and north-western suburbs are 35-45 minutes from Brewood. Central and southern Birmingham can be 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.

I have a Victorian terrace in Birmingham. What lock do I need?

For a Victorian Birmingham terrace, the standard insurance-compliant setup is a BS 3621 five-lever mortice deadlock as the main lock plus a high-security rim nightlatch as the second point. Both fit like-for-like into a solid timber door.

Can you fit anti-snap cylinders in Birmingham uPVC doors?

Yes. TS007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond rated cylinders are standard van stock. For most modern Birmingham uPVC doors, the cylinder upgrade is a 5-minute job and is independently tested against the snap attack, which is the most common forced-entry method on a uPVC door.

I had a break-in in Birmingham. Will you help with the insurance claim?

Yes. I provide an itemised receipt that lists parts, labour and the lock specifications most insurers ask for on a claim (confirm specific requirements with your own insurer). For Birmingham properties that typically means a BS 3621 mortice for Victorian terraces and 1930s suburban homes, or a TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder for newer estates. Parts and labour itemised separately for quick claim settlement.

Can you fit new locks the same day in Birmingham?

Yes, almost always, depending on which side of Birmingham you're on. Western and north-western suburbs are 35 to 45 minutes from Brewood. The locks most commonly needed across Birmingham, BS 3621 mortice and TS007 anti-snap cylinders, are both standard van stock. Most jobs are finished inside an hour of arrival.
