Key won't turn? Here's how to tell if you can fix it yourself.

If your key won't turn in the lock, it's one of five things, and you can rule out four of them in two minutes on your doorstep. The diagnostic below walks through them in the order I work through them when I arrive. Stop forcing the key while you read this. Each forced turn from here either snaps the key in the keyway, strips the cam inside the cylinder, or drives the gearbox cassette into a state where the only fix is drilling the cylinder out and replacing it.

Can I fix a key that won't turn myself? An honest answer.
Most people who Google a key that won't turn are hoping they can fix it without paying a locksmith. The honest answer depends on exactly four things, set out below. If you read this list and the answer is "yes, this is fixable at home", I would rather you save the money than pay me to do a job you could have done with a £4 can of graphite. If the answer is "no, this needs a locksmith", you know now, and you have my phone number.

If the key goes in fully but won't turn at all...
Try every other key on your bunch first. Door keys, garage keys, gate keys and padlock keys all feel similar in the dark. Wrong-key-in-right-lock is the most common cause of a "key won't turn" call I get, and it costs you nothing to rule out. If it really is the right key, move to stage 02.

If the key turns part way and stops, or you have to lift / drop the door handle to get it to go...
You almost certainly have a uPVC door that has dropped out of alignment. The multi-point gearbox cannot extend its hooks into the keeps on the frame because the door and the frame are no longer square. Trying to force the key from here is the fastest way to snap the key or strip the gearbox. The fix is hinge adjustment on the doorstep, covered within the standard emergency attendance and labour price, followed by a gearbox check.

If the key turns roughly, feels gritty, or has been getting stiffer for weeks...
Dry lubricant. One spray of graphite or PTFE dry lubricant into the keyway, work the key in and out three or four times, try again. Available at any hardware shop or screwfix.com for a few pounds. Do not use WD-40. The Master Locksmiths Association is explicit that oil-based lubricants should not be used on pin-tumbler cylinders. WD-40 is a thin penetrating oil that attracts dust and grit, which eventually gums up the pins.

If none of the above works, or you can feel something has snapped inside the lock...
The gearbox cassette or the cylinder has failed mechanically. You need a locksmith. Stop forcing the key. Every wrong move from here pushes a stuck cam into a position where the only fix is drilling the cylinder out. What stops a key from turning
The Keytek Forgetfulness Index (Locksmithing Census 2020-2025), which analysed 350,000 UK locksmith call-outs between 2020 and 2025, found that around one in five jobs are caused by human error rather than mechanical failure (source: Keytek Forgetfulness Index (Locksmithing Census 2020-2025)). A key that won't turn is the textbook example: the lock was telling you something for months, ignored once too often, and now the door is locked from the wrong side. These are the six causes I see most often on the doorstep.
- Wrong key. The most common cause of a "won't turn" call I get. Door keys, gate keys, garage keys and padlock keys all feel similar in the dark. Try every key on your bunch first, it costs you nothing.
- Misaligned uPVC door. Hinges droop over time, the door drops a few millimetres, the multi-point gearbox hooks no longer line up with the keeps on the frame. Having to lift the handle hard to lock the door is the early warning.
- Worn or cheap duplicate key. The bow has bent, the cuts have worn shallow, or it was a cheap blank cut at a high-street kiosk from thinner metal than the original. The cuts no longer line up with the pins.
- Dry or gritty cylinder. Pin-tumbler cylinders need dry lubricant. The factory lubricant dries out after five to ten years, pocket fluff and grit make their way in, and the cylinder seizes up. Per the Master Locksmiths Association, the right product is graphite (NOT oil-based lubricants like WD-40).
- Failed multi-point gearbox. The gearbox cassette inside a uPVC door does most of the mechanical work. When it fails (grinding noise, sudden hard stop, key won't turn) it is a mechanical failure of a metal component, not something you can fix at home. Replacement on the doorstep from £145.
- Frozen lock in winter. Cold metal plus moisture in the keyway equals frozen tumblers. A hairdryer aimed at the cylinder from outside the door (NOT boiling water, that cracks the cylinder body) thaws it in five minutes.
Safe-to-try fixes (in order)
Three things you can safely try at home, in the order I would try them on the doorstep before reaching for the tools. If none of these get the door open, stop and call. A two-minute phone call almost always finds something safe to try before I get into the van.

Try every key on the bunch
Wrong-key-in-right-lock is the most common cause of a "key won't turn" call. Try every key on your bunch before you do anything else, even keys you are sure are for a different door. The cost is zero and the embarrassment is private.

Lift or drop the handle while turning the key
On a uPVC composite door the handle has to be lifted firmly to drive the multi-point hooks into the keeps before the key can turn the cam. If the door has dropped slightly on its hinges, lifting the handle harder (or letting the door bear its own weight by pulling it towards you with the spare hand) re-engages the gearbox. This works often enough on slightly out-of-square doors to be worth trying.

One spray of dry graphite or PTFE lubricant
Into the keyway, not around it. Work the key in and out three or four times to distribute the lubricant through the pins. Try the key again. A few quid from Screwfix or any hardware shop. Do NOT use WD-40. The Master Locksmiths Association is explicit: "On no account should oil be used to lubricate pin-tumbler cylinders" (source: Master Locksmiths Association). WD-40 is oil-based. It works for a fortnight then makes the problem worse.
A common assumption
Most people assume a key that won't turn means buying a new lock. It almost never does. On the key-won't-turn calls I attend, in roughly eight out of ten cases the fix is a hinge adjustment, a spray of graphite, or trying the right key. The cylinder is fine. The gearbox is fine. The door just needs five minutes of attention from someone who knows where to look.

Why won't my key turn in the lock?
Five causes account for nearly every "key won't turn" call I get. One: it's the wrong key (the most common, and free to rule out). Two: the door is uPVC and the multi-point gearbox has dropped out of alignment, so the hooks no longer reach the keeps on the frame. Three: the cylinder is dry or full of pocket fluff and needs lubricating. Four: the key itself is worn or was a cheap high-street duplicate cut from thinner metal than the original. Five: the gearbox cassette or the cylinder has failed mechanically. The diagnostic flowchart on this page walks through them in the order I work through them on the doorstep.
How do I fix a key that won't turn in the front door?
In order: try every other key on your bunch first (wrong-key is the most common cause). If the door is uPVC, lift the handle firmly while turning the key (this re-engages a gearbox that has dropped out of square). If neither works, spray a small amount of dry graphite or PTFE lubricant into the keyway, work the key in and out three or four times, and try again. If the key still will not turn, stop. Each further turn risks snapping the key or forcing the cam into a position that requires drilling the cylinder out. Can I spray WD-40 in my lock if the key won't turn?
No. The Master Locksmiths Association is clear: "On no account should oil be used to lubricate pin-tumbler cylinders. Graphite is the conventional lubricant for this mechanism." WD-40 is oil-based. It dries out the lock's own dry lubricant within weeks and leaves a tacky residue that grit clings to, so the lock that was stiff today becomes seized in six months. The right product is dry graphite spray or a PTFE dry lubricant, available from any hardware shop or screwfix.com for a few pounds. One spray into the keyway, work the key in and out three or four times, that's it.
Why does my uPVC door key only turn when I lift the handle?
That is a multi-point door that has dropped out of alignment. The gearbox inside the door has hooks (and usually a deadbolt and a latch) that extend into matching slots called "keeps" on the door frame. When the door hangs square, lifting the handle drives those hooks straight into the keeps and the key turns easily. When the door drops a few millimetres on its hinges (which happens slowly over years), the hooks no longer line up with the keeps and the gearbox has to be forced. Lifting the handle is the workaround; the fix is hinge adjustment, which is a doorstep job that takes ten or fifteen minutes and is included in a standard call-out.
What's the difference between a key that won't turn and a key that turns but won't open the door?
A key that won't turn at all means the cylinder is the problem (wrong key, dry cylinder, worn cuts, failed cylinder, or the gearbox locked). A key that turns but won't open the door means the cylinder is fine, the cam is rotating, but the gearbox bolts that the cam is driving have failed or jammed. The fix is different: cylinder problems mean a cylinder change (from £90), gearbox problems mean a gearbox replacement (from £145). How much does it cost to fix a key that won't turn?
It depends on what the diagnosis turns out to be. Hinge adjustment for a uPVC door that has dropped: included in the call-out (from £90 standard hours). Lubrication and a small adjustment on the doorstep when nothing has failed yet: from the call-out fee alone. No. Every forced turn from here either snaps the key in the keyway, strips the cam inside the cylinder, or drives the gearbox cassette into a state where the only fix is drilling the cylinder out and replacing it. The job that was £90 for a hinge adjustment becomes £90-plus for a drilled-out cylinder. Step away from the door. Phone me.
