Stafford is the county town and a regular destination for me, about 30 minutes north of Brewood up the A449. The whole ST16, ST17 and ST18 area is on my coverage map, including Baswich, Wildwood, Weeping Cross, Castlefields, Doxey and Brocton.

  • Basic DBS Checked
  • £1M Insured
  • 12 months Guarantee

Trained to the current UK locksmith syllabus. Where a job in Stafford calls for a security-rated lock I fit to the relevant UK standard: TS007 euro cylinders, BS 3621 mortice locks where the door takes one, and manufacturer specification for uPVC multi-point mechanisms and window locks. A basic like-for-like cylinder change starts at £90, with a TS007 3-star anti-snap upgrade quoted separately. Fresh van stock and a real motivation to do each job properly.

Working as a locksmith in Stafford

Stafford has more variety than most of the surrounding towns. The town centre and the older streets like Friars Walk, Lichfield Road and the Foregate are mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces with wooden front doors. The southern suburbs of Baswich, Wildwood and Weeping Cross are 1960s-1990s detached and semi-detached estates, mostly uPVC. Castlefields and Doxey on the western side are a mix of post-war housing and newer 2000s developments.

For the older Stafford properties, I'd typically recommend a BS 3621 mortice lock plus an upgraded rim lock for insurance compliance. For the newer estates, the front-door cylinder upgrade is the priority. Stafford is also worth knowing for window locks, as a lot of the 1990s uPVC windows in Baswich and Weeping Cross have espagnolette window locks that fail with age and need replacing rather than repairing.

Brocton, on the southern edge of Stafford and right against Cannock Chase, is more rural. I cover it as part of the Stafford zone, but bear with the response time, it's a few minutes further out than the town itself.

Two recent Stafford patterns side by side

Stafford's housing variety means the same week often throws up two completely different jobs. A typical pair I might see:

Pattern A. Victorian terrace near the town centre. Original timber front door with a 100-year-old mortice lock that has gone past its working life. The fix: a BS3621 5-lever mortice fitted like-for-like into the existing pocket, plus a new high-security rim lock above. The door looks unchanged from the outside, insurance-compliant inside. About 45 minutes start to finish.

Pattern B. 1990s detached in Baswich or Weeping Cross. uPVC front, original cylinder, never upgraded. The customer's insurance has just renewed and the policy now specifies an anti-snap cylinder. The fix: TS007 3-star Ultion or ERA Fortress cylinder swap, 5 to 10 minutes' physical work, then a photograph of the kitemark for the policy file.

Same week, two different doors, same logic underneath: fit what the lock actually needs to do, to the standard the customer's insurance asks for, with no joinery damage. Both jobs were quoted on the phone before I left Brewood. Pattern A came in mid-morning, daytime rate; Pattern B was an evening call, out-of-hours rate. Different prices, but each one fixed and all-in, no call-out fee on top.

Pattern A. Original Victorian terrace timber, takes a like-for-like BS3621 mortice without joinery.

Pattern B. TS007 3-star kitemark on the cylinder, the standard insurance ask on a 1990s Baswich uPVC.

  1. Thursday 16 April 2026 at 10.30am

James and Sarah Edwards, A Weeping Cross close, Stafford

A larger 1970s detached on the Weeping Cross side, original timber side door with a 1970s mortice that had become unreliable. Sarah's insurer had asked for a current BS 3621.

Daytime call-out, around 30 minutes from Brewood. ASSA BS 3621 5-lever mortice fitted into the original pocket, kitemarked, no joinery. Around 60 minutes on site, original brass furniture untouched. £90 plus the lock.

  2. Saturday 25 April 2026 at 9.45am

Mrs Helen Roberts, Baswich Lane, Baswich (Stafford)

Two bedroom uPVC windows that had stopped locking properly, both fitted in the late 1990s. Helen had been wedging one shut for months and the other had stopped turning the handle entirely.

Diagnosed as failed espagnolette strips on both, on the doorstep, free of charge. Weekend rate but a single all-in price for both windows quoted on the call (cheaper than two separate trips). Around 40 minutes per window, glass and frame undisturbed. Both locking properly again before lunch.

  3. Monday 11 May 2026 at 12.45pm

Andrew and Claire Hughes, Wildwood Drive, Wildwood (Stafford)

New-buyer lock change. They'd just completed on a 1980s detached on Wildwood Drive and wanted everything re-keyed before moving the kids in.

Daytime visit, three uPVC fronts (front, side, conservatory) all swapped to TS007 3-star Ultion cylinders keyed alike, plus a survey of the ground-floor window espagnolettes. Around two hours on site. Six new keys cut on the van. £90 visit plus the four cylinders.

Lock brands I fit in Stafford

Stafford has more housing variety than most of the towns I cover, so the brand mix is wider too. Yale and ASSA ranges come up most for the Victorian and Edwardian timber doors in the town centre. On the modern uPVC fronts in Baswich, Wildwood and Weeping Cross, Ultion and ERA Fortress are the cylinders customers most often ask for.

I'll fit whatever brand you prefer. These are simply the ones that come up most often on Stafford front doors, and you're welcome to choose your own.

How it works

How a uPVC window espagnolette lock works

The handle on a uPVC window turns a steel rod (the espagnolette strip) running the full length of the window's opening edge. Mounted along the strip are mushroom-shaped cams or rollers that, as the rod turns, rotate into corresponding keeps in the frame. When fully engaged, the cams pull the window tight against the rubber seal. Failure is almost always a snapped or worn cam, or a sheared spindle in the gearbox at the handle end. Replacing the strip resolves both, without disturbing the glass or the seals.

Turned up on time and fixed it. That's enough for me.

Common locksmith questions about Stafford call-outs

Specifics for Stafford and the surrounding area.

Do you cover the whole of Stafford?

Yes. The whole ST16, ST17 and ST18 area is part of my coverage. That includes the town centre and all the southern and western suburbs from Baswich and Weeping Cross through to Castlefields, Doxey and out to Brocton.

Can you replace failed window locks on uPVC windows?

Yes. uPVC window espagnolette locks are common to fail with age, especially on windows fitted in the 1990s. I replace the mechanism rather than the whole window, which is a fraction of the cost of new fenestration.

My Stafford home is Victorian. What lock should I have on the front door?

For a Victorian front door with insurance compliance in mind, the standard recommendation is a BS 3621 mortice lock with a five-lever sashlock plus a rim lock for a second point of security. I fit both like-for-like with no door damage.

I had a break-in in Stafford. Will you help with the insurance claim?

Yes. I provide an itemised receipt that lists parts, labour and the lock specifications most insurers ask for on a claim (confirm specific requirements with your own insurer). For Stafford properties that typically means a BS 3621 mortice for the Victorian and Edwardian terraces, a TS007 cylinder for the newer southern suburbs, or a replacement espagnolette mechanism for failed window locks. Parts and labour itemised separately.

Can you fit new locks the same day in Stafford?

Yes, almost always. Stafford is around 30 minutes from Brewood via the A449. The locks most commonly needed here, BS 3621 mortice for older properties, anti-snap cylinders for newer estates, and espagnolette window mechanisms, are all standard van stock. Most jobs are finished inside an hour of arrival.
