Trained to the current UK locksmith syllabus. Where a job in Lichfield calls for a security-rated lock I fit to the relevant UK standard: TS007 euro cylinders, BS 3621 mortice locks where the door takes one, and manufacturer specification for uPVC multi-point mechanisms and window locks. A basic like-for-like cylinder change starts at £90, with a TS007 3-star anti-snap upgrade quoted separately. Fresh van stock and a real motivation to do each job properly.

Working as a locksmith in Lichfield
Lichfield has one of the most varied housing profiles I cover. The conservation area around the cathedral, Bird Street, Dam Street and Bore Street is full of historic timber-framed and Georgian properties with original wooden doors and traditional mortice locks. The newer Lichfield estates, particularly around Streethay, Boley Park and Stowe Pool, are 1960s-2000s detached and semi-detached uPVC fronts.
For the historic Lichfield properties, lock replacement is a careful job. The conservation status of many of the doors means a like-for-like BS 3621 mortice in the existing pocket is usually the only acceptable option. I work with that, no door damage, the original timber is left intact.
Fradley and Shenstone are different again. Fradley has a large mix of newer 2000s-onwards estates plus the Fradley industrial estate, mostly uPVC fronts. Shenstone is a more traditional village with a higher proportion of older detached properties along the Birmingham Road and around the village centre.
From the doorstep
Listed-building lock challenge in the Lichfield cathedral close
The hardest Lichfield front-door work is in the cathedral conservation area. The challenge is fitting an insurance-grade lock without changing the door's external appearance. Listed-building consent, in the strictest cases, will not allow visible changes.
The route I take: stay inside the existing lock pocket. Most Georgian and Victorian Lichfield front doors have a lock pocket sized for a 3-inch or 3.5-inch mortice case, which is exactly what a modern BS3621 5-lever mortice from Yale or ASSA fits. The kitemarked face plate may be slightly different from the original, but it is identical in size, sits in the same pocket, and the brass escutcheon on the outside does not move.
If the existing keep is too narrow for the new mortice's bolt, the keep gets a tiny rebate hidden inside the frame. Nothing visible from the street.
The customer ends up with a door that an insurance assessor will sign off as BS3621-compliant, and a conservation officer would (and on equivalent work, has) accept as a minimal-impact upgrade. Conservation jobs are quoted on the phone before I leave Brewood, like any other, with the rate set by day and time of call. Fixed all-in price, no call-out fee. The survey time is built into the quote, so a longer assessment of an old door does not generate a bigger bill on the doorstep.

Mrs Caroline Harris, Bird Street, Lichfield (cathedral conservation area)
Grade-II-listed property in the cathedral conservation area. The original Georgian front door's mortice had become unreliable. Listed-building consent restrictions meant nothing could be visibly altered.
Daytime call, around 35 minutes from Brewood. ASSA BS 3621 5-lever mortice fitted into the existing pocket, kitemarked face plate flush in the original rebate. Tiny hidden frame-keep rebate inside the frame; nothing visible from the street. Around 80 minutes on site. £90 plus the lock. Caroline emailed the conservation officer the photos and got sign-off the same week.

Andrew and Emma Jones, A Streethay close, eastern Lichfield
New-buyer change. They'd completed on a 2008 detached and wanted the front, back and garage-door cylinders changed before moving in.
Weekend rate £170, single all-in price for the visit agreed on the phone. Three TS007 3-star ERA Fortress cylinders, keyed alike, all fitted in around 90 minutes. Five matching keys cut on the van. Done before they'd finished unloading the removal van.

Daytime call-out, on her doorstep in around 40 minutes. Ultion TS007 3-star fitted in around 8 minutes. Kitemark photo for her insurance the same morning. £90 plus the cylinder.

Lock brands I fit in Lichfield
Lichfield's cathedral conservation area has timber front doors that need a like-for-like BS3621 mortice in the original pocket. Yale and ASSA ranges fit without joinery work in most cases. For the newer Streethay, Boley Park and Fradley estates, ERA Fortress is the cylinder upgrade that comes up most often.
-
Yale
The household name in UK door locks, with kitemarked products across mortice locks, nightlatches and Euro cylinders.
-
ASSA
Swedish high-security cylinder maker (part of Assa Abloy) common on Scandinavian-style oval profiles and master key systems.
-
ERA
British-owned lock maker known for the Fortress range, a workhorse on UK uPVC and timber doors.
I'll fit whatever brand you prefer. These are simply the ones that come up most often on Lichfield front doors, and you're welcome to choose your own.
How it works
How a like-for-like upgrade keeps a listed door legal
Listed-building consent allows minor maintenance and replacement work that does not alter the building's character. A like-for-like lock replacement, where the new lock fits the original pocket without enlarging it and the externally visible hardware (escutcheon, handle, paintwork) is unchanged, is generally considered minor maintenance. The door's character is preserved, the lock is upgraded to current insurance spec, and no consent application is normally needed. For the strictest cases, I would always recommend a quick check with the Lichfield District Council conservation officer before work starts.
Fixed first time. No messing.
Common locksmith questions about Lichfield call-outs
Specifics for Lichfield and the surrounding area.
My Lichfield front door is in the conservation area. Can you upgrade the lock without damaging it?
Yes. Most historic Lichfield front doors can take a BS 3621 mortice lock as a like-for-like replacement in the existing lock pocket, with no visible change to the door. That's the standard approach for conservation-area properties.
Do you cover Fradley and Shenstone as well as Lichfield itself?
Yes. Fradley to the north and Shenstone to the south are part of my Lichfield response zone, with the same coverage and pricing.
How long does it take you to reach Lichfield?
Around 35 minutes from Brewood, via the A5. Slightly longer at peak times due to traffic on the A5 around Cannock and Burntwood.
I had a break-in in Lichfield. Will you help with the insurance claim?
Yes. I provide an itemised receipt that lists parts, labour and the lock specifications most insurers ask for on a claim (confirm specific requirements with your own insurer). For Lichfield properties that typically means a BS 3621 mortice fitted like-for-like into conservation-area front doors, or a TS007 anti-snap cylinder for newer estates in Streethay, Boley Park and Stowe Pool. Parts and labour itemised separately.
Can you fit new locks the same day in Lichfield?
Yes, almost always. Lichfield is around 35 minutes from Brewood via the A5. The locks most commonly needed here, BS 3621 mortice for conservation-area properties and anti-snap cylinders for the modern estates, are both standard van stock. Most jobs are finished inside an hour of arrival.
