I run a letting agency in Wolverhampton and unfortunately had a tenant whose UPVC locking system had collapsed locking them into the flat unfortunately during the football match between England and Croatia in the 2026 World Cup. As you can imagine, I was having a bit of trouble getting a locksmith! At least until Sean contacted me. Composite-door diagnosis: what I check on a Codsall callout
Composite doors are physically stronger than uPVC, but they still rely on the cylinder and the gearbox for security. When a Codsall composite door is not locking properly, here is what I look at on the doorstep, in order:
- Door alignment with the frame, top, middle, bottom. If the door has dropped, the bolts will not line up with the keeps.
- Hinge wear. Composite doors are heavier than uPVC; the hinges can take a battering over years.
- Cylinder protrusion. A cylinder sticking out more than a few millimetres past the handle is the snap-attack vulnerability point.
- Gearbox cam smoothness. Lift the handle slowly with the door open and listen for resistance.
- Cylinder rotation. The key should turn smoothly through the cam.
Diagnosis takes 5 minutes. Most issues turn out to be hinge adjustment or a worn gearbox cam strip, not a new door. Whichever of the five points lights up the issue, the fix has a fixed all-in price quoted on the phone before I leave Brewood. The rate depends on whether you ring during daytime hours or out-of-hours, but no call-out fee is added on top either way.

Why a composite door is only as strong as its cylinder
A composite door has a high-density polymer skin and a foam core, all bonded into a steel-reinforced frame. Physically, it is far harder to kick in than uPVC.
