Trained to the current UK locksmith syllabus. Where a job in Bilston calls for a security-rated lock I fit to the relevant UK standard: TS007 euro cylinders, BS 3621 mortice locks where the door takes one, and manufacturer specification for uPVC multi-point mechanisms and window locks. A basic like-for-like cylinder change starts at £90, with a TS007 3-star anti-snap upgrade quoted separately. Fresh van stock and a real motivation to do each job properly.

Working as a locksmith in Bilston
Bilston's housing is typical Black Country: Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the older streets, including the area around Bilston Town Hall and the High Street, plus extensive post-war housing on estates like Stowlawn, Stowheath and the Bradley side. Newer developments on the periphery are 1990s onwards, mostly uPVC.
For Bilston terraces, the standard insurance-compliant lock setup is a BS 3621 five-lever mortice deadlock plus a high-security rim nightlatch. The terraces typically have solid timber front doors that take both locks without modification.
For Bilston post-war and modern housing, the typical job is the same TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder upgrade or uPVC multi-point gearbox repair you see across the rest of the WV postcode area. Bilston is close enough to Wolverhampton that the gearbox brands match, predominantly Fullex, GU, Mila and Lockmaster.
From the doorstep
Repair or replace? A Bilston decision tree
On the doorstep of a Bilston uPVC repair, the first decision is repair or replace. I work through it like this:
Is the door physically straight in the frame? If yes, repair almost always wins. If no (visibly twisted, sagging by more than a few centimetres, frame failed), repair becomes a worse option.
Is the gearbox the issue, or the cam strip alone? Cam strip alone is a 30-minute strip swap. Full gearbox is a longer job but still cheaper than a new door.
Is the cylinder snap-vulnerable or has it been attacked? A TS007 3-star upgrade is 5 to 10 minutes either way.
Is the door hung correctly on its hinges? Hinge adjustment is the cheapest fix and resolves a lot of "door will not lock" complaints.
If three of those four point towards repair, repair is right. If three point towards replace, replace is right. I will tell you which, and why. Most Bilston uPVC doors I survey come out of the assessment as a repair, not a replacement. Once the assessment lands on a fix, the all-in price is quoted on the phone before I leave Brewood, with the rate matching the day and time you ring. No call-out fee added on top. The four-point check itself is part of the visit, not an extra.

Lock brands I fit in Bilston
Bilston's older terraces around the Town Hall and High Street take Yale BS3621 mortice as the typical insurance-compliant fit. The Stowlawn, Stowheath and Bradley post-war and modern estates are mostly uPVC, where ERA Fortress and Avocet ABS are the cylinders most often asked for on the anti-snap upgrade.
-
Yale
The household name in UK door locks, with kitemarked products across mortice locks, nightlatches and Euro cylinders.
-
ERA
British-owned lock maker known for the Fortress range, a workhorse on UK uPVC and timber doors.
-
Avocet ABS
Anti-snap Euro cylinder built around a patented locking cam that blocks the lock case if the cylinder is attacked.
I'll fit whatever brand you prefer. These are simply the ones that come up most often on Bilston front doors, and you're welcome to choose your own.
How it works
Why a slack uPVC handle is rarely a broken gearbox
When a uPVC handle goes slack, the gut reaction is "the gearbox is broken". Usually it is not. Inside the gearbox housing, a metal cam strip transmits the handle's motion to the multi-point bolts. The strip is a thin pressed-steel piece that flexes slightly each time the handle is lifted. After thousands of cycles, the strip fatigues and one of its bend points snaps. The handle still moves; the broken strip just does not move the bolts any more. Strip-only replacement is a 30-minute job and a fraction of the cost of a full gearbox swap.
Nice lad. Didn't mess about, just did the job.
Common locksmith questions about Bilston call-outs
Specifics for Bilston and the surrounding area.
How long does it take you to reach Bilston?
Around 25 minutes from Brewood, via the A449 through Wolverhampton or via the M6/M5 depending on traffic.
Do you cover the whole WV14 area?
Yes. WV14 covers Bilston itself plus the surrounding areas of Bradley, Coseley and the Bilston-Wolverhampton border streets. All within my coverage zone.
My Bilston front door is uPVC and the handle has gone slack. Can you fix it?
Almost always yes. A slack handle on a uPVC door is usually a worn multi-point gearbox strip. I carry the most common strips for Fullex, GU, Mila and Lockmaster on the van, so most jobs are done in a single visit.
I had a break-in in Bilston. Will you help with the insurance claim?
Yes. I provide an itemised receipt that lists parts, labour and the lock specifications most insurers ask for on a claim (confirm specific requirements with your own insurer). For Bilston properties that typically means a BS 3621 mortice for the older terraces, a TS007 anti-snap cylinder for the modern uPVC fronts, or a multi-point gearbox repair for dropped doors. Parts and labour itemised separately.
Can you fit new locks the same day in Bilston?
Yes, almost always. Bilston is around 25 minutes from Brewood. The locks most commonly needed here, BS 3621 mortice for older terraces, anti-snap cylinders for modern uPVC and Fullex/GU/Mila/Lockmaster gearbox strips, are all standard van stock. Most jobs are finished inside an hour of arrival.
