The dropped-door myth: a Wombourne walkthrough
The single most common worry I hear in Wombourne: "My uPVC door has dropped, I think I need a new door." Almost never true.
What is actually happening: the door has been hung in the frame for 20-something years, the hinges have flexed, the frame has settled, and the multi-point bolts no longer line up with the keeps in the frame. The door itself is fine.
The fix is one of three things, in order of frequency:
First, a hinge adjustment. Most uPVC hinges have screws that adjust the door up, down, in and out by a few millimetres. Five minutes work, no parts.
Second, a frame-keep adjustment. The metal keeps in the frame can sometimes be moved by a few millimetres to meet the bolts.
Third, if the gearbox cam strip itself has snapped (which is what makes the handle go slack), a strip replacement. I carry the most common Fullex, GU, Mila and Lockmaster strips on the van.
Cost of all three: a fraction of a new door. The new-door quote you have been given by someone else is, in most cases, hundreds of pounds you do not need to spend. Whichever of the three the doorstep diagnosis points to, I give you an all-in price on the phone before I set off, with the rate set by the day and time you call. No call-out fee on top, so you can compare the number against any new-door quote before I am even in the van.

How it works
How a multi-point uPVC gearbox actually wears out
