If a uPVC window has stopped opening or will not lock, the problem is nearly always the locking mechanism, not the window itself. A seized espagnolette strip, a handle that spins without gripping, mushroom cams that have dropped out of line with their keeps, or friction hinges that have stiffened with age: every one of those is a repair, not a replacement. The expensive mistake is letting a window or glazing firm talk you into new windows when a £75 to £115 mechanism repair would have sorted it. uPVC window won't open? Three checks before you force anything
Before you wrestle the handle or reach for a tool, run these three checks. Between them they tell you, and tell me on the phone, whether you are looking at a worn handle, a misaligned sash, a dry mechanism or a failed strip. The difference is a quick adjustment versus a part, and forcing a stiff window handle is the one move that turns the cheap fix into the dearer one.

Try the handle gently, both ways, and don't force a stiff one
Turn the window handle slowly to the unlocked position and try the sash. If the handle is stiff, do not heave on it: a window handle that is fighting you is usually a sign the cams are caught or the mechanism is dry, and forcing it is exactly how handles snap off in your hand. A handle that turns freely but does nothing has lost its grip on the mechanism. A handle that will not reach the full unlocked position means the cams are jammed against their keeps. Each tells me something different.

Look down the opening edge: are the cams lined up with the keeps?
With the sash open even a crack, look at the long locking strip down the edge of the window. You will see small mushroom-shaped cams that roll into matching keeps on the frame when you lock it. If a cam is sitting proud of its keep, or scraping the frame, the sash has dropped slightly and the mechanism is binding. That is an adjustment, not a new window, and it is the single most common reason a uPVC window stops opening or locking cleanly.

Check the hinges and the rebate for grit, old paint or seized arms
Open windows that have not moved in months sometimes just need the friction stays (the metal hinge arms) freeing off, and the rebate clearing of grit, leaves or a skin of old paint. A squirt of dry PTFE lubricant on the hinge arms and the cams, worked in gently, frees a lot of "stuck" windows with no parts at all. Never use oil or WD-40, which gum up and attract more dirt. If it still will not move after that, the mechanism or a stay has failed and needs a proper repair.
Is it the espagnolette, the handle, the cams or the hinges?
Match your symptom to one of the four branches below. Each tells you what has almost certainly failed, what fixing it costs, and how long it takes. Every one of them is a repair to the window you already have. If anyone tells you a failed window lock means a whole new window, that is the upsell to walk away from.

If the handle turns or spins freely but the window won't open or lock...
The handle has lost its grip on the espagnolette mechanism: either the handle spindle has worn, or the drive cam inside the gearbox has rounded off, so turning the handle no longer slides the locking cams along the strip. On most uPVC windows this is a quick fix. If the mechanism just needs freeing and adjusting that is from £75, a new handle is from £85, and if the espagnolette strip itself has failed it is replaced from £115. I carry the common handles and strip lengths on the van so it is usually one visit.

If the handle won't turn the full way to lock the window...
The cams on the locking strip are not lining up with their keeps on the frame, usually because the sash has dropped a touch on its friction hinges or the keeps have worked loose. The cams catch instead of rolling home, so the handle stops short. Forcing it is how handles snap. The fix is normally an adjustment, easing the hinges and realigning or repacking the keeps, from £75 and often no new parts at all.

If the window has stiffened up and only opens with a real fight...
A dry, stiff espagnolette and seized friction stays, with seasonal expansion of the uPVC as the final straw. Cleaning and lubricating the mechanism and the hinge arms, then adjusting the keeps so the cams roll in cleanly, normally frees it off for good, from £75. If a stay or the strip has actually broken under the strain, replacing it is from £115.

If a cockspur or espagnolette handle has snapped or won't engage...
A broken or worn window handle is one of the cheapest jobs there is. The old handle comes off, a matching new one goes on, and the window locks properly again, from £85. The only thing to get right is the handle type and the spindle, because cockspur, espagnolette and tilt-and-turn handles are not interchangeable. What a replacement-window salesman won't tell you
A uPVC window that will not open or lock can almost always be repaired by freeing or replacing the mechanism, the handle or the hinges, for a fraction of the cost of a new window. The locking gear is a separate, replaceable part bolted to the sash. A new window is only genuinely needed when the frame itself or the sealed glass unit has failed, which is a different problem. I would rather adjust your existing windows and have you recommend me than sell you replacements you did not need.
Why it's almost always a repair, not a new window
This is the part the window-replacement industry would rather you did not know. The bit of your window that has failed (the handle, the espagnolette strip, the gearbox, the mushroom cams, the friction hinges) is hardware that bolts to the sash and the frame. It is designed to be removed and replaced on its own. None of it requires touching the glass or the frame profile. A seized mechanism, a spinning handle or a dropped sash is a mechanical repair measured in tens of pounds, not a glazing job measured in hundreds.
A genuinely new window is only the answer when the frame has cracked or distorted, the sealed double-glazed unit has blown (misted up between the panes), or the sash has physically failed. Those are real, but they are a different fault from a lock that has stopped working, and a handle that spins is not evidence of any of them. If I come out and the honest answer really is that the window is beyond a hardware repair, I will tell you plainly and you will owe me nothing for parts I have not fitted.

Why won't my uPVC window open?
On a uPVC window it is nearly always the locking mechanism, not the window itself. The usual causes are: the espagnolette (the long locking strip down the window edge with the mushroom cams on it) has seized or its gearbox has failed, so the handle turns but the cams will not pull in; the cockspur or espagnolette handle has worn or snapped so it no longer drives the mechanism; the cams have dropped out of line with their keeps so they are wedged; or the friction stays (the metal arms in the hinge) have seized after years with no lubrication. Far less often the sash has simply been painted or sealed shut. The good news is almost all of these are a repair, not a new window. My window handle spins round but the window won't open or lock. What's wrong?
A window handle that turns but does nothing has lost its grip on the mechanism. Either the spindle or drive cam inside the espagnolette gearbox has worn round, or the handle itself has stripped, so turning it no longer moves the locking cams along the strip. It is the window version of a door handle going floppy. On most uPVC windows this is a quick fix. A new handle is from £85. Can a uPVC window lock be repaired, or do I need a whole new window?
In the large majority of cases it is a repair, and anyone telling you the whole window needs replacing because the lock has failed is selling you a window you do not need. The locking mechanism (the espagnolette strip, the gearbox, the handle, the cams and keeps) is a separate part that bolts to the sash and can be freed, adjusted or swapped on its own. A new sealed glass unit or a whole new window is only needed if the frame itself has failed or the double glazing has blown, which is a different problem entirely. If I get to your window and genuinely cannot repair the mechanism, I will tell you that to your face and not charge you for parts I have not fitted.
How much does it cost to repair a uPVC window lock?

My window won't lock and the handle won't turn the full way. What's the problem?
If the handle will not turn fully to the locked position, the cams on the espagnolette strip are not lining up with their keeps on the frame. Usually the sash has dropped slightly on its friction hinges, or the keeps have worked loose, so the mushroom cams are catching instead of rolling into place. Forcing the handle in that state is how handles snap. The fix is normally an adjustment: easing the hinges, realigning or repacking the keeps, and a little lubrication of the mechanism, from £75 and often no new parts at all. If a cam or the gearbox itself has actually broken, that is a gearbox replacement from £125.
My window has stiffened up and won't open in hot or cold weather. Is that the lock?
Partly. uPVC expands a touch in the heat and the sash sits slightly differently through the seasons, which is enough to make a marginal mechanism bind. But a window that only opens with a real fight has usually got a dry, stiff espagnolette and seized friction stays underneath the seasonal movement, and the weather is just the final straw. Cleaning and lubricating the mechanism and the hinge arms, then adjusting the keeps so the cams roll in cleanly, normally frees it off for good, from £75. If the strip or a friction stay has actually failed, replacing it is from £115. Either way it is a repair on the window you have, not a new one.
How long does a uPVC window lock repair take?
A single window is usually 20 to 40 minutes depending on whether the espagnolette can be freed and adjusted or needs swapping for a new strip. A handle change is 10 to 15 minutes. If you have a few windows to do in one visit, allow roughly half an hour a window, less for handles. I test each window several times, opening, closing and locking it with the handle, before I take payment, so you are not left with one that binds again the next time the weather turns.
